I may be worse than poor mother...

Roberta Hewitt

Socialist, activist and wife of John Hewitt

A month of depression. The Korean war struggles & the U. Nations assembly meet and talk and decide nothing. U.S.A. insisting on China being pronounced the aggressor. McArthur, the old fool, bawling away now that we are fighting for a free Asia.

General feeling is now that there is a hope of avoiding a major clash, but it is maybe that we are getting immune again to loss of life, so long as it isn’t us. There has been a serious flu epidemic all over and my mother and Pappy has [sic] been ill. […]

She has been difficult, very depressed and touchy and unmovable from her way. I am afraid I will be like her when I am her age. But Anne says if I am she will tell me. I hope I will have enough sense to listen to her and try to keep sympathy with young people – but I cannot promise, I may be worse than poor mother.
