It was my first glimpse of a foreign town...

Sylvia Mary Duffin (Molly)

Teenage girl documenting a trip to Germany & social life

The through train to Karlsruhe started at 5:30 & we were in lots of time. A fat Dutch official had reserved us two window seats so we were well off.

Passing through Rotterdam was interesting as it was my first glimpse of a foreign town*. The journey seemed very long, but when we reached the Rhine, our spirits revived & we enjoyed the view thoroughly.

Frau von Hirschfelde met us at the station in Karlsruhe & we drove to 99 Kriegstrasse in a landau. Here we met Miss Wylie, Grace English & Kathleen Appleby & we were taken to our rooms to have tea & ‘settle in’.
