Nazi planes kept coming back...

Moya Woodside

Nazi planes kept coming back, for all the world like some giant swarm of insects, whose drone was only ineffectually interrupted by bangs and crashes. For lengthy periods no noise could be heard but the planes kept flying about.

One fretted ‘why don’t they fire at them’ and ‘where are our fighters’. At 3 am I could stand it no longer, feeling desperately frightened and somewhat hysterical, I put on a dressing gown and went down to join my husband. I grabbed the whiskey decanter, with shaking hands drank off about a quarter tumbler neat to try and pull myself together. […]

We sat down in the pantry under the stairs, and just waited. After a while I recovered my self-control, and began to reflect mournfully that this – this was civilisation in 1941.
