So many fires in such a small space...

Roberta Hewitt

[…] We went down Sandy Row to see the fires & arches. So many fires in such a small space – some were burned down to a ring of red hot ashes – others blazing at full pitch & then some being lit.

American popular songs were being played from gramophones thru amplifiers & in one street they had a small orchestra playing in a gateway into a microphone & the young people were dangling – it was very nice & such a change from the old bitter party songs “For we’ll tighten up the rope & we’ll make them curse the Pope” etc.

The only thing I didn’t like was the American popular songs – but perhaps it’s better to keep Irishmen away from their own sad songs & besides most of the best Irish songs are Green and not for Orangemen.
