We only spent 1 day in Havannah [sic] the most part of which was spent in getting passports verified...still we managed to see a good deal of the town which is old and very unhealthy looking but most picturesque.
The streets are very narrow & the houses old & rickety. The Spaniards are a very good looking race & most refreshing after the stolid negroes of Jamaica. The cathedral is outstanding not from it’s beauty as much as from the fact that Columbus is buried there. The church S Merced also most interesting but very Tawdry a curious sort of grotto Chapel supposed to represent a mountain chapel in the Pyrenees.
The market was most delightful. How I wish I could sketch these delightful Spaniards with their smiles & great bales of fruit. They “compose” so well. The Cubans seem to be always making Revolutions & there is no love lost between them & the Spaniards & Americans.
