We went on to the ice cave...

J P Smiles

Young girl documenting a family trip to Switzerland

This morning we set out for a walk to the upper glacier…we went on to the ice cave. The cave is made afresh every year, as I suppose it becomes closed up – at the entrance to the cave were large rugs to put over one, be we required none as mother and I both had our waterproofs.

As we ascended a little ladder till we came to the cave itself – the further on we went the more intense became the blue. Water dripped down – it was lovely inside and deep blue – clear, sometimes full of light and at other times it was almost dark.

The first cave was just a tunnel and came out upon the entrance to the second cave into which we went further and further till it was almost dark and at last in a gloomy corner we came upon a little light, it was almost romantic, or rather it felt as if one had gone to some unearthly and out of the world place.

We sat sketching and talking till the gentlemen arrived back. They had been down ladders, down the sides of steep precipices and what not, it wouldn’t have done for all us ladies to have gone with them.
